A mini-tournament for the competitive video game ‘Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’ is being held in Stoke-on-Trent today.
It is to be held in the Film Theatre on Staffordshire University’s College Road campus, and will be played by students who are avid fans of the game.
Around 20 students are expected to attend to both watch and play in what is hoped to be the first of a series of video game tournaments
‘Super Smash Bros. for WiiU’ was released in 2014 to popular reception, and has become an extremely popular video game to play in both a casual and competitive environment.
It is considered an eSport by the gaming community, meaning the game is played professionally by certain gamers who are particularly skilful.
The organiser of the event, Chris Body of the Staffordshire University Video Games Society, is a huge advocate of eSports:
“I think eSports is a great thing. I’m a big fan of eSports, however I don’t think it will ever be entirely mainstream as conventional sports; it won’t have that kind of acceptance. I do hope that it grows and becomes more mainstream though.”
The video games society is also interested in holding more eSports-related events in the future, with Chris saying that the society would definitely consider holding both viewing parties and tournaments between students.
There is also the chance that future tournaments could be opened up to the public, with the society considering the possibility of doing so.
Any students of Staffordshire University are welcome to the event, and can simply sign up on the door.
