With The Division, Ubisoft is attempting to muscle in on the ‘shared world shooter’ territory held by Bungie’s Destiny, but offers a distinctly different experience to that of the current genre king.
There’s an overt focus on realism and seamlessness as you make your way around the grim streets of New York City in the aftermath of a devastating plague that’s turned the city into a warzone.
As the epidemic occurs on Black Friday, Christmas decorations adorn the bleak and dangerous snowy streets making for a remarkably grim setting.
Unfortunately, only one story mission was offered as part of the beta so Ubisoft is keeping its cards close to its chest in terms of narrative.
Various side quests and events showcased standard gunplay mechanics with a deep level of weapon customisation in this cover-based shooter/RPG hybrid.
Enemies are smart, skilful use of your chosen abilities, a tactical approach and a generous reliance on cover is needed to survive the hefty challenge the game presents.
Missions, as well as general exploration, can be done with a team of up to four players, which we highly recommend for getting the most enjoyment out of The Division.
But be wary, other players can also prove the biggest threat to those that explore beyond the confines of the barricades and into the vast lawless area known as The Dark Zone.
It’s an intense PVP area that offers the best loot and a host of other players all too willing to gun you down to obtain it.
Initial impressions show The Division is a smarter, slicker experience than the average shooter.
The level of depth and player freedom in this huge immersive world should make this a real contender for Destiny’s shared world experience when it’s finally released next month.
